Protect us from Pesticides
“The Rules That Should Protect Us From Pesticides Are Inadequate, Advocates Say.”
In a new release, Consumer Reports and the Environmental Working Group call for a bill of rights to protect people from the health harms of pesticides.
Consumers should enjoy more and stronger protections from the health risks of harmful pesticides, say Consumer Reports and the Environmental Working Group. Today, the two organizations released a Consumer Pesticide Safety Bill of Rights, outlining suggested changes.
“These are reforms that are long overdue because people have the right to expect that the things we bring into our homes, our schools, the food we serve our kids, are safe,” says EWG senior vice president of government affairs, Scott Faber, “especially when it comes to toxic pesticides.”
The rights enumerated include knowing whether a pesticide is linked to cancer or other health problems, knowing if toxic pesticides are sprayed near homes or schools, and knowing that children’s food is protected by the best possible safety standards for pesticides. Consumer Reports has long advocated for stronger protections around pesticides in food.
The advocates hope the bill of rights will help persuade Congress to address long-standing gaps in pesticide-related consumer protections and reject any new pesticide-related legislation that doesn’t strengthen such protections.
